Nineteenth century: historical linguistics.

It is important to know that before the 19th century, language was of interest mainly to philosophers. Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle did make major contributions to the study of language. Plato is said to have been the first person who distinguish between nouns and verbs. The paint we are showing is called "Plato and Aristotle in the School of Athens" imagined by Raphael.
